The Most Amazing Sunset Sunrise Ever

The Lemaire Channel in Antarctica

Everyone has experience amazing sunrises and sunsets and I have certainly had my share but never in my life have I witnessed something like I did in 2005 on my first trip to Antarctica. It was 11:20 PM and there was nice sunset in the works as we approach The Lemaire Channel a 1600 meter wide channel known as Kodachrome Alley.

Having shot many sunsets I assumed that this one like all others I have witnessed would last a few minutes at best but I was severely wrong. Instead of the sunsets I was used to this one was beyond incredible and it just kept getting better and better. I was shooting so much that I coined the phrase Major Gigage in reference to just how much I was shooting.
I was like a kid in a candy store. The Bow of the boat was one color and the stern another and each side yet something else. I am not exaggerating but just as it was about to set almost 2 hours later it began to get brighter and we went from sunset to sunrise and the whole channel was awash in a glow that lasted more than 3 hours.
I made sure that this location would be on our agenda for every future trip assuming it was always like this. In all of my trips to Antarctica, I have never witnessed anything like this again.
