Observer or Participant

Trapper in the Everglades

Are you an observer or a participant? When photographing people I always try to be a participant.

You can either sneak and image or you can just observe or you can enter the personal space of the subject. For me I always try to enter into their space. The camera becomes non existent and you communicate with your eye through the lens as if the camera isn’t present. You feel the subjects soul and energy and the image truly speaks.
One may think that it is a confrontational process but I find it to be the opposite. When you don’t put the camera down and react and continue to photograph there is a sense of curiosity that develops and that process seems to break any confrontational aspect.
