Jay Maisel
Happy 92nd Birthday to my dear friend Jay Maisel who has been an inspiration to me since my days at Syracuse. Jay has had a profound influence on me as both a creative person and business person. I would jokingly refer to him as GOD and I can’t even begin to count how many times I think about him when I have a camera. One of his prints hangs proudly on my wall and I sit every morning drinking coffee staring at it.
Jay Maisel’s  career as a professional photographer started in 1954 after he studied graphic design at Cooper Union and Yale. He has photographed Marilyn Monroe, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and numerous Sports Illustrated covers, and likely has the greatest collection of photographs from the city that never sleeps.
Jay is a true master of color and his use of color is so profound that there are certain shades of the color red that he could literally patent. As an artist you can recognize his imagery without every seeing the signature.
I just got off the phone with him and he sounds great. It is a true honor to know him.

“Always carry a camera; it’s tough to shoot a picture without one.” – Jay Maisel

“Some have said that if you take a great picture in color and take away the color, you’ll have a great black-and-white picture. But if you’re shooting something about color and you take away the color, you’ll have nothing.” — Jay Maisel
