Last Wednesday, the skies unleashed their fury, bringing with them Milton and his tempestuous entourage—the tornadoes. In an instant, our world was plunged into darkness. The hum of modern life, represented by the comforting glow of light and the reassuring buzz of communication, fell silent. Power flickered out, taking with it the threads that connected us to the outside world. My generator hummed valiantly, a lone soldier fighting against the encroaching shadows, but it could not restore communications served by Comcast and AT&T. No phone, no internet and no television.

As I stepped outside, the aftermath of nature’s wrath lay before me. The very trees that had stood sentinel over my home were now toppled, their majestic forms reduced to mere obstacles on my path. A tornado had likely swept through, its chaotic dance leaving behind a trail of destruction. Over the following days, I wrestled with the remnants of this storm, using a winch on my Jeep to hoist the fallen trees back to their rightful places. Each tree lifted was a small victory, a testament to resilience in the face of adversity. My iron gate is still in need of  medical treatment from a  welder in order to stand tall again.

Today, as I sit here with the comforting glow of screens restored—Internet, phone, and television—the weight of gratitude washes over me. Lynda, my children, and I emerged unscathed from this tempest, our home untouched by the chaos that ravaged so many around us. In Florida, lives have been irrevocably altered, families shattered. Friends in Asheville still grapple with the remnants of Helene’s fury, their spirits tested in ways we can scarcely imagine.

Yet, I choose not to dwell on the images of my fallen trees, nor to share the scars left by the storm. Instead, I turn to the beach—a canvas painted by nature’s hand. This week, I observed its transformation, a serene expanse shifting from calm to stormy and back again. The waves, like emotions, ebb and flow, reminding us that tranquility and turmoil are but two sides of the same coin.

In this delicate balance, I find solace. I am grateful for the quiet moments, the laughter of my children, and Lynda’s love.  The storm has passed, but its lessons linger. Life is a tapestry woven with threads of chaos and calm. Each experience, whether filled with joy or sorrow, contributes to the richness of our narrative.

As I reflect on this week of upheaval, I am reminded of the strength that lies within us all. We are not merely survivors of nature’s whims; we are custodians of our own stories, capable of rising from the rubble, of finding beauty amid the wreckage. Today, I stand with gratitude, ready to embrace the calm after the storm, cherishing not just the tranquility that follows, but the resilience we cultivate in its wake.
