In the summer of of 1925 South Georgia's peak whaling year- 23 ships caught and killed 7,825 including 5,709 Fin and 1,855 Blue Whales, to produce more than 400,000 barrels of oil. In the following year the catch included 3,689 Blue Whales. By 1930 more than 40,000 whales were slaughtered. Sir Ernest Shackelton died here on January 5th, 1922.
