Going Digital in Santa Fe

June 22 - 28, 2003
Seth Resnick

© Seth Resnick

When photographers arrive on location, they are often faced with conditions often far different from those they expected. Amid the beautiful light and spectacular surroundings of Santa Fe, participants in this workshop focus on achieving new creativity while learning the intricacies of digital workflow and fine-tuning the business skills needed for success in contemporary digital photography.

The first part of our week focuses on bringing back beautiful photographs from virtually any location, no matter what the obstacles. We seek to create images in and around Santa Fe, from before sunrise until well after sunset, that go beyond what our eyes generally see. We explore technical skills involving digital capture, Photoshop™, color management, meta data, archiving, lighting, and filtration in order to broaden our repertoires and open up new horizons in assignments and stock photography. Part two extensively covers the preparation of the assignment, both pre- and post-production. We incorporate role-playing to teach the subtle art of negotiating a good deal, explore the latest in model releases, contracts, and presentation methods, and discuss the implications of both traditional and digital delivery.

Finally, we look at the skills needed to compete in today’s ever-changing commercial marketplace, delving into the intricacies of a digital business and learning how to position ourselves as photographers of the future. Topics covered include making money in the digital world, PDF contracts, Web sites, marketing, stock, portfolio, printing, copyright, global marketing, and delivery of reproducible images over the Web.

Participants are required to bring a digital camera, laptop, and peripherals.

A note from Seth

As our careers progress, we all suffer from interludes of creative stagnation. We need boosts of inspiration and fresh perspectives to stimulate our creativity. My main goal for this workshop is to inspire you and push you ahead in your career. I won't be happy unless you're invigorated with fresh professional goals. I thoroughly expect that you'll receive total information overload.

My hope is to create with you changes in your creative processes, enhance your business skills on multiple fronts, and immerse you in technologies which will no doubt influence your future. There will be daily assignments and critiques tailored to your needs .

It would be easy for you to come to Santa Fe and make nice images in a weeks time but I really want you to leave with much more. I'd like you to to come away with a body of work that you can truly use in the future.

LETTERS FROM PARTICIPANTS:

Tony Arruza

A year ago I made the decision that changed my photography business in an extremely positive manner. I decided to attend a business and photography workshop by Seth Resnick at the Santa Fe Workshops. I understand he is offering it again and I strongly recommend that you attend.

Believe me, I know that it is not an easy decision to make. The workshop will cost you money and time. I remember signing up for the workshop and then canceling, foregoing my deposit. Fortunately for me I met a photographer who knew Seth and talked me into making the trip to Santa Fe. He stressed the impact it would have on my career. I've never regret the decision.

I am a successful photographer with over 25 years in the business and even though I've been an ASMP member for 20 years I was surprised at how much more I needed to learn about the business side of photography. Seth will not only help you to understand contracts, forms, business costs, copyright laws and insurance needs but also very important tactical negotiation techniques and practical marketing methods. His hands-on approach to negotiating and communicating with editors, art directors and account executives are simple and effective. Since my return from the workshop I have not had a single client reject my request for a signed contract (my contract!) prior to an assignment. I honestly am a much better and informed negotiator and my confidence level is high.

In addition to the business skills and shooting techniques that you will immerse yourself in (oh yes, you will be photographing too), Seth will venture into the digital age and how he has learned to use the web to great advantage. You will simply be awed by what Seth knows about the web and how much of it he shares with his students.

As photographers you owe it to yourself to raise your business standards, which in the end helps raise it for the entire industry. What you learn you will want to pass along. Finally, you are going to enjoy working with Seth, he's approachable and loves to have a good time, and if you haven't done so already, you will fall in love with Santa Fe. Really, you can only win by attending.

Yours sincerely,

Tony Arruza

Tony

Seth's warm, open and fun nature create a learning environment that is incredibly stimulating and inspirational. He showed me that anything is possible and what it takes to move my career to the next level.

In his class, you will prepare to handle many situations. Seth opened my eyes to different, simple lighting techniques that I'd never considered.  He took us to great locations and shared ways of approaching shooting that have proved very useful since his class.

Seth, referred to by many highly accomplished photographers as "the best business man I know" generously shares strategies and techniques that when implemented, will help you grow your business in the most professional way possible.

Particularly helpful to me was role playing in which Seth presented typical tricky situations I face on a regular basis. This gave me information and skills to maintain positive relationships with my clients while operating my business in the most productive way possible.

After Seth's class, I feel I have the knowledge and confidence to move forward with my career.  The only warning: be prepared to have a lot of fun and sleep very little!

As a 26-year veteran commercial shooter who had attended two of Seth Resnick's evening or day-long seminars fairly recently prior to spending the week with him in Santa Fe, I wasn't sure just what I would gain through the experience. I only knew that I wanted to spend more time in his amazing energy field and absorb some of his marvelous negotiating ability and to broaden my awareness of the real meaning of "win-win." These goals were amply met in Santa Fe, but the real surprise was the subtle effect on me of sharing the week with 15 wonderful photographers from all over the US (and Turkey!) Somehow, the experiences of the week changed me, broadened me, inspired me in ways that are only now, months later, becoming apparent.

Thank you, Seth and everybody, for "shakin' me up."

As a newcomer to freelancing, I knew Seth's class would help my back-office
no matter what.  What I didn't count on was just how much it reignited my
creative eye.   Although the business of photography is lots of hard work, I
was surprised to find how much my creativity grew once I understood my
business better.  Gaining confidence in business practices somehow
translates into additional shooting confidence.  Needless to say, Seth and
the other participants made the week go by in a flash, even with 20 hour
days!

Thanks Seth, Brendan, John, Melissa, Lena, Russ, Jim, Ali, Caryn, Richard,
David, John, Mitchel, Joanna, Julie, and Jennie.

Like a good book, brilliant sunrise, and stunning rainbow, a week in Santa Fe
with Seth Resnick is a "must do" for any photographer.  You can count on
leaving New Mexico truly energized, and loaded with priceless information,
ideas, inspiration, and laughter.  If you are looking to cultivate your
career--and embrace new friends in the photography industry--Seth Resnick's
class is for you.  Don't miss out on a truly incredible experience!

Let me just say that Seth Resnick’s Santa Fe workshop is phenomenal. What impressed me about Seth and his workshop? Was it his obvious expertise of complex, highly technical wiz-bang computer intricacies? Or perhaps his own unique eye when crafting a photograph by subtly combining light and image and composition? Is it his boundless (i.e. illimitable, infinite, gregarious) energy level that inspires? (translation, never sleep) Could it have been that he shares all of this with his students with amazing generosity? Is it the group of other accomplished  professionals in the class that contribute to the learning experience as well as to the joviality?  It is all of those things, because these assets are yours if you take Seth’s workshop. As for me, it is Seth’s in-depth knowledge of the very best Cabernets, what year, which vineyard and where to get them.
Seriously, I have been a photographer for 20 years, 10 of those as freelance. As I embark on the 2nd half of my chosen passion and profession as a photographer, Seth’s workshop gave me a crucial map to study, carry and refer to along the way. Highly recommended.
